Minister's message

On Sunday we observe Refugee Week. Coordinated by the Refugee Council of Australia, it is intended to raise awareness of refugee issues and encourage empathy with their situation. The Refugee Council notes that our emergence from the pandemic provides an opportunity to â??hit the reset button on how we behave towards one another.â?� The past two and a half years have seen many people experience hardship. That shared experience invites us to work for healing through listening to stories and recognising our shared humanity.  

The Tamil refugee family, Priya, Nades, and their young daughters Kopika and Tharnicaa, have finally been permitted to return to their community in Biloela in Queensland. Many Australians rejoiced with the campaigners who have worked for four years to bring them home. Read the facts of their story here. 

The Nadesalingam family have provided a human face to the refugee crisis in Australia. However, there are still 19,000 people on temporary visas in Australia, and 1380 people held in offshore detention. We donâ??t know their names and faces. They have no path to settlement. The Refugee Council is asking the new government to work for healing by enabling them to be at home here too. 

This week I encourage you to explore the Refugee Council resources and events. The Uniting Church has been advocating for justice and reconciliation for refugees and people seeking asylum for many years. The 2015 resource Shelter from the Storm is still relevant today.

Keeping Children Safe - St Michael's Uniting Church

In April 2019 St Michaelâ??s Council began the process of adopting and implementing all

the policies and procedures that were required to be recognised as a SAFE CHURCH.

We fulfilled all the necessary requirements.

The National Child Safe Policy Framework 2022, provides the foundation for the

continued development of good policy and practice across the life of our Church.

In continuing to implement these processes, St Michaelâ??s also complies with State and

Federal laws.

Each year, St Michaelâ??s Church Council is required to reaffirm the Keeping Children Safe

Statement of Commitment. This was accomplished at our May Church Council meeting.

This is our commitment:

The St Michaelâ??s Uniting Church is committed to providing safe places where people are

cared for, nurtured and sustained.

We have today reaffirmed the Keeping Children Safe Statement of Commitment.

Through it, we recommit ourselves to the care, protection and safety of all people,

particularly those who are vulnerable.

Church Council also reviewed the Keeping Children Safe Code of Conduct and the

statement of commitment to induction and training.

Keeping Children Safe is a continuous process as we work together to ensure that St

Michaelâ??s Uniting Church is a safe place for all people.

Queen's Birthday Honours

 

The community of St Michaelâ??s Uniting Church extend our congratulations to Dr Anne Lierse AM and Joe Chindamo OAM, both leaders in Victoria's creative industries, who were recognised on the 2022 Queen's Birthday Honours list. 

Dr Rosemary Anne Lierse was appointed a Member of the order of Australia (AM) for significant service to music education. Anne has spent many years as music educator, reasearcher and advocate for music in schools. She has been a music teacher and Director of Music in primary, secondary independent and government schools, including Melbourne High School. Under her direction, in 2009, Melbourne High Schoolâ??s music program was nationally recognised by ABC FM and Music Play for Life winning the â??National Flame Award' for the school with the most outstanding music program in Australia, which included singing. She has played a pivotal role with the Victorian Music Teachers' Association. Anne is a member of St Michael's.

Mr Joe Chindamo received the award of the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to music, and to the performing arts. Joe is a regular musician at St Michael's. His career has crossed many genres and he is now one of Australia's most productive and celebrated classical composers.
