??Margaret's message

Last night I was overjoyed to learn that Rev Raphael Warnock, a graduate of my alma mater Union Seminary, had been elected as Senator in Georgia. Rev Warnock is the first Black Senator of this former confederate state. I woke to the news that the United States Capitol had been invaded by violent supporters of Donald Trump. I am grieved for my US friends and colleagues and for all US citizens who value democracy and the peaceful transfer of power.

Some of the rioters invoked the name of Jesus in support of the coup. Some carried signs proclaiming ??Jesus Saves??. This is not the Jesus of the gospels. Fortunately the majority of Christian leaders in the US have spoken out against the violence. As Christians, we are called to speak out against the abuse of the Gospel, wherever we are. Christian faith can be used to justify good and evil and silence supports oppressors. In Epiphany, let us as people of St Michael??s bear the light of hope inherent in the message of Jesus ?? hope for peace and justice, furthering the vision of the Beloved Community.

Jan Richardson offers an Epiphany blessing for those who bear the light.

Peace and blessings
Margaret

Raise the Rate for Good

??

The Raise the Rate campaign advocates for a change in policy in an effort to reduce poverty and inequality in Australia.

Before the COVID-19 crisis, the rate of Newstart had not been increased in real terms for 25 years, while the cost of living, especially housing, has gone through the roof.

"The goal of the Raise the Rate campaign is to fix our social security safety net for good so that it keeps people out of poverty, with income of $500 per week. Experts define the poverty line in Australia as $480 - $500 per week for a single person with no children, including housing costs".

??Vale - Constance (Connie) Calwell

19/11/1928 - 23/12/2020

St Michael??s remembers Connie Calwell with great affection and appreciation.
Connie had a very long association with St Michael??s, having ??stood in?? for several of our organists, when they were on leave. It was always a great pleasure to see and hear Connie at the organ.

Her association with St Michael??s encompassed the periods of time that John Cowan, Ian Harrison, David McFarlane and Calvin Bowman were the resident organists.
Connie continued to play the St Michael??s organ into the early 2000??s and gave her last Thursday Organ Recital at St Michael??s in July 2008, during Rhys Boak??s time. Connie retired soon after that occasion.

We are very grateful for Connie??s valued service to St Michael??s.
