Future Spirituality

February 9, 2015 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

What is the future of spirituality in Australia?
What does research indicate about the future of the spirituality of Australians?

Dr Philip Hughes, minister and researcher from the Christian Research Association, presents research findings and discussion on the future of religion and spirituality in Australia. In this presentation Dr Hughes explores what we know about spiritual wellbeing from research in Australia and examine why many Australians refer to themselves as ‘spiritual but not religious’.

Dr Hughes has researched the spirituality of young Australians, organisation and leadership in rural churches, and been involved in research internationally, conducting research in Thailand at the South East Asia School of Theology. Some of his recent studies have involved surveys of Buddhist, Muslim and Christian young people.

In 2010, Dr Hughes was a major author, along with Peter Kaldor and Alan Black, of the study entitled Spirit Matterswhich explored some of the implications of religious and spiritual perspectives on people’s sense of meaning, purpose, mental health, physical health, values and contribution to society. He has also been contributing to the international debate about spirituality and tolerance and published a major paper in the journal Implicit Religion on this topic.
